I blame the neither. I blame the automobile industry. IIRC, the idea for an engine to run on other forms of fuel was made a reality in the 70′s. One of the Big 3 bought the patent and stored it away in the back room. I’m not a huge conspiracy theorist but it is my firm belief that the auto industry receives kickbacks from the oil industry to keep producing cars that use petrol.

I am a firm supporter of the government requirements on the auto industry to produce cars that use less fuel and burn cleaner. Although I am disappointed the auto industry did not take it upon themselves to do this as I am usually opposed to government interference. I am also disappointed that society as a whole did not put more pressure on the auto industry.

Until we change our ways as Americans, we will continue to allow our over-consumption to dictate our ways. If we don’t take it upon ourselves to change, the government will do it for us. And that, most likely, 1) will be too restrictive and 2) give preferential treatment to certain segments of the population.

I blame both groups – oil companies are part of a big, corrupt industry, this much is true.. But we are only supporting it.
