Are you looking for a job?

At the gym this morning, I saw a blurb flash across the tv: 14 million Americans are unable to find a job. Wow. Sounds bad, huh? Pretty sobering statistic.

The current state of our economy is certainly a major factor here, but there is one other relevant component that is not being talked about: the face of a modern day job is changing.

We are rapidly becoming a global economy. Many traditional jobs are being outsourced. You’re competing with people in China or India that are willing to do your job for less than .50 cents an hour. How do you compete with that?

The answer: you don’t. More and more people are going to have to create their jobs, rather than looking to someone to hire them. What worked yesterday won’t work today (and certainly isn’t going to work tomorrow). We need creativity and imagination and leadership. Now more than ever, we need entrepreneurs.

Don’t look for a job. Create one.

We also need to come to terms with the fact that almost all of us have been living above and beyond our means for quite some time now. How many people do you know that constantly push to make that extra $100 or $200 a paycheck in hopes of “getting ahead” financially only to find a monthly expenditure for that money they day they have it? How exactly does taking on more and more debt help you get ahead? Unless you are trying to get ahead in the race to have more stuff than you can afford…or you want to get ahead in the “setting yourself up for failure” game.

Most people in our country have been setting themselves up for failure for decades. Live within your means, people!! Just because you are making more money in that new job doesn’t mean you need a new Escalade and a bigger house. If your monthly monetary obligations eat up the vast majority of your household income what are you going to do when the bottom falls out? I guess we’re finding out right now, aren’t we?

The problem I run into with clients is that they are always looking for the cheapest way to do something. I think that is the wrong way to think. We need to think how we can do something better than everyone else and if you do that then you really are not in competition. What can you do that cannot be outsourced?

I agree with you fully. Why do we keep chasing the increase in pay? There comes a point where more money only gets you more stuff. Stuff is fun but it is not happiness. Why don’t we ask our boss during our next pay increase to forgo the increase and be able to work 5 less hours a week?
